Adult treatment
In adulthood, orthodontic therapy helps in the establishment of bite function, in periodontal treatment, as preparation for prosthetic treatment, for the removal of traumatic occlusion, the rapid expulsion of teeth and of course, for aesthetics. There is no age limit for orthodontic therapy. There is practically no difference in the mechanics we use to move the teeth with children and adults.

Orthodontic treatment
The position of your teeth can be corrected at any time. Look at it this way: your teeth are connected to the jaw with fibres; they are not firmly attached to the bone. During orthodontic treatment, we use locks to apply pressure to the teeth, which causes the reaction in the bone and moves the teeth to the desired position.
During the treatment, teeth become loose and therefore more receptive to moving to the wanted position.
Your teeth will be firmly anchored to the bones when the therapy ends and after the retention phase.
Diagnosis
We use the diagnostic records (models, X-rays and photos) to plan treatment and specify timings. We then explain each step to you in an in-depth consultation. In this session we also explain the different treatment options and describe the various types of appliances available.
This all sounds far more protracted than it actually is. And what is most important, it doesn’t hurt.
Fixed braces
Fixed braces consist of brackets and bands bonded or cemented to your teeth (to get a hold of them), and very thin metal wires that gently push your teeth into their right positions. The wire is tied into the brackets with a steel ligature or a coloured plastic ring. Some brackets have clips to hold the wires and no ties are needed. Brackets can be made of metal or tooth-coloured ceramic or plastic. Ordinary fixed braces are bonded to the front of your teeth. There are also braces that can be bonded on the back of your teeth (lingual braces). Sometimes it also makes sense to use additional rubber bands or other aids, but this is something the patient decides for him or herself. The treatment requires monthly check-ups to activate the appliance. The orthodontist moves tooth in a desired position, not aplliance.
You don’t want your fixed braces to be noticeable? There are alternatives to the shining metal brackets: ceramic brackets the colour of your teeth, transparent brackets made of sapphire, or invisible brackets attached to the inside of your teeth (lingual brackets).
Invisalign
Invisalign® braces are transparent aligners that must be worn around the clock, but can be taken out for around two hours each day. They are very thin and thus very comfortable to wear. Their advantage is that eating, dental care, engaging in sports or playing an instrument are all a lot easier and more convenient than with other braces.
Retention
Retention follows the active part of the therapy in which fixed braces are worn on teeth. Retainers are mobile braces, which are worn after taking the fixed braces off and serve to retain teeth in their correct position. Retainers must be worn exactly as instructed, otherwise teeth could return to their initial position. There are various types of retainers: the transparent splint (Essix retainer), the type with wire elements (Wraparound retainer, etc.) and fixed wire type that are applied to the inner surfaces of the front teeth. The time of use is unlimited, especially if the patient keeps the harmful habits of pushing the tongue when swallowing, breathing through the mouth, etc.
This is the best way to keep your beautiful smile.
Hygiene
During orthodontic treatment it is necessary to maintain impeccable oral hygiene. Complete instructions on how to maintain hygiene, patients receive at the beginning of therapy, and if they respect the guidelines, there is no risk of caries. At each examination, except for new movement of teeth, we also check condition of all teeth and timely prevention of tooth caries. There is no worry that caries shall occur beneath the braces or that the braces that will damage the tooth. Adhesive which are used for fixation of braces to teeth, protect tooth enamel from caries so braces will not damage the enamel.
